Buying Used 4x4 Trucks
More and more people are buying used 4X4 trucks online and it's easy to understand why. If you're planning to do some mud running or put that truck through a tough workout, why bother investing all that money in a brand new truck that's going to depreciate as soon as you drive it off the lot? You're just going to rough it up anyway. Who cares if it has a little paint chip in the hood?
One of the best reasons to buy a used 4X4 though is because they're just built better than a standard 4-door sedan. They're tougher. They're built to take more abuse. And that means they last longer. So buying a used 4X4 really means you're getting more value for your money. You have a more powerful vehicle that's going to be reliable for years to come.
Buying online also gives you a lot more options than going into a dealership. Of course the most obvious benefit is – if you don't like the deal you can just go to another site, and there are dozens to choose from. But the variety to choose from online is so much larger. You can find exactly what you're looking for at exactly the right price.
Obviously, you'll want to shop carefully, though. Some of the sellers you'll see have never even shifted into 4-wheel drive while others have put those trucks through a strenuous workout, to say the least. Here are some tips for buying used 4X4s online:
Get pictures:
Make sure the seller has pictures of everything, not just the driver's side door! Even get pictures of the engine, the wheel wells, the under-carriage and the axles.
Get records:
At the very least, get the vehicle identification number (VIN) so you can find out if the 4X4 has been involved in any major accidents. But ask the seller if he can also provide repair and maintenance records and if the vehicle is still under any of its warranties.
The basics:
Of course you're going to want to find out the basics like year, make, model and mileage.
Price:
Do the research to find out acceptable price ranges for the type of 4X4 you're interested in. It's never a good idea to shop for a truck unless you already have a budget in mind. Otherwise, you might be dazzled by a fancy online description and end up paying more than the truck's really worth. You'll find plenty to choose from online so if the one you're looking at now doesn't fit your budget, don't worry. You'll quickly find another one that you may like even more.
Before you whip out your wallet, do yourself a favor and go drive the truck. Lock it into 4WD and make sure everything is working properly. Take it to a reputable mechanic for a good inspection. Since we're talking about buying used 4X4s, have the mechanic pay close attention to struts, axles, motor mounts, and other parts that see more stress when you're racing up mountains and doing donuts in the mud.
